About East Texas - Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant Mount Pleasant, Texas

Mount Pleasant, Texas (www.mpcity.org), only ten miles from The Peninsulas, has been named “One of the 100 Best Small Towns in America.” Located in the beautiful northeastern part of the Texas piney woods region, Mount Pleasant is within easy driving distance of seven lakes and numerous state parks with year-round recreational opportunities. Several of the lakes have the reputation of being the best fishing lakes in Texas, with records to prove it. Along with the beauty of these streams, lakes and lush forest, the area’s moderate climate and bountiful rains, healthy local economy, favorable tax base and cost of living—all make the Mount Pleasant area an ideal location for any homeowner.

Texas Convenience

Dallas, TexasA “Texas Main Street” city, Mount Pleasant is ideally located also within convenient driving distance to Dallas, Shreveport, and Texarkana, while the city of Tyler, known as the Rose Capital of the World, is close by. Agri-business, industry, tourism, and wholesale and retail trade are the chief occupations of residents of Mount Pleasant. Northeast Texas Community College serves the residents of Mt. Pleasant itself, and other fine educational establishments are within easy driving distance.

While the town is set among lovely rolling green hills that are certainly pleasant, there is, in fact, no mountain to justify the town’s name. The name of the town was taken from that of a burial mound of the indigenous Caddo Indians, which the Caddos called “Pleasant Mound.” Settlers took up the name, later altering it to Mount Pleasant. The Caddos were the first known settlers in this area, and lived here until around 1845. They were known to frequent the mineral springs that now are a part of one of the present city’s municipal parks, Dellwood Park. Numerous sites of Caddoan villages and burial mounds can still be seen in the area.

Mount Pleasant offers an abundance of activities and outstanding facilities that enhance the area’s quality of life. The Mount Pleasant Country Club features tennis courts, an eighteen-hole golf course, swimming, and excellent dining. The Shadow Lakes Golf and Practice Range features a premier lighted par-3 golf course and practice range and has added batting cages. The city's parks are equipped with playground equipment, picnic areas, fishing piers, tennis courts, swimming pool and a little league baseball complex.
